Elder Holland

I found this great talk by Elder Holland. He is speaking to missionaries in the MTC and has wonderful, wise, inspiring words to share about missions. What to do. How to be. What it will take. You will see him speaking a little less formally than you are used to seeing him in the General Conference, including cracking jokes. Enjoy:

Firefighting 101 with Bishop Brush

The teacher's quorum has started a series of career exploration nights. The first episode was to learn more about firefighting as a career. The amazing Bishop Brush gave a great presentation about what he does, how to become one, the benefits, the drawbacks, etc.

And for the grand finale, Alex got to dress up in the gear.

Sliding Rock

On Tuesday the teachers and priests drive to Alpine, UT and did a short hike to the beautiful and somewhat secret "Sliding Rock." It is an amazing natural water slide, where the water has worn the granite smooth. The water is really, really cold, but the slide is really fun. Enjoy the photos and videos below.

High Adventure Camp 2013

Our High Adventure Camp 2013 was a success. We had a lot of fun, learned valuable lessons, laughed together, prayed together, cooked together, and ate together.

We camped in Zion's National Park the first day and hiked to Emerald Pools. The second day we conquered Fat Man's Misery Canyon. This required courage, grit, rappelling gear, orienteering skills, and a lot of water.

We had a one night stop over in a hotel in Panguitch on our way to Escalante where we camped at Posey Lake. There, we enjoyed a beautiful view, caught pet snakes, and enjoyed the lake.

On our last day, we hiked to Upper Calf Creek Falls and enjoyed swimming in the beautiful natural pools and waterfalls.

Opening your mission call

I vividly remember the strong emotions I felt when I opened my mission call. I remember the impact  I felt when I read the words "Elder Rockwood, you are hereby called to serve as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints." The Spirit was very strong, and so were my feelings of excitement, nerves, and anticipation. I remember the sweet feeling when I read the words "Dominican Republic, Santiago Mission." Soon, you will be having that same moment in your own life. Live your life in such a way that the Lord can use you like a sharp tool to do his work and represent his will. Enjoy the video below. It captures very well the atmosphere of that powerful moment.

That moment when you read your call marks the beginning of your ministry and the beginning of a lifelong love of the people and the region where you are assigned to labor. Just like the prophets of old, you will represent the Savior, teach what he taught, love (in a smaller way) as he loved, and participate in the great work of redeeming Israel and the greater work of bringing joy and the door of exaltation to your brothers and sisters. Don't let anything stand in your way!
